Chianti Classico Riserva PRĪMUM 2018

The Riserva from the premium Primum range of this San Donato in Poggio estate includes 5% Cabernet Sauvignon instead of the Alicante Bouschet used for the Annata. lt is aged for an additional year in large casks, which has resulted in a darker, more serious vibe, at least on the nose: bittersweet cherry emerges with spicy hints of anise, cardamom and leather. However, the palate is more straightforwardly hedonistic, with meltingly soft raspberry fruit, creamy acidity and velour tannins. Score: 91

Chianti Classico PRĪMUM 2019

This soft, pillowy Annata from San Donato in Poggio-based Montecchio comes from moderate-elevation vineyards close to San Donato town itself. Despite a colour boost from 5% Alicante Bouschet, it remains a modest ruby in colour. The sweet, tender cherry nose with rosebud tea and curry leaf is foreshadows a jellied entry that’s plump with glycerol but alluringly diaphanous. The tannins are powdery and discreet, catching the fullness of the front-palate in a delicate crescent on the back. Score: 90
